Van life Yorkshire Dales + Howgill Hike

Updated: Apr 9

Van life Yorkshire Dales are you looking for a remote and safe park up location in the Yorkshire Dales, then look no further than Stump Cross Caverns. £10 gets you a safe park up, with £5 credit to spend in the cafe in the morning.

First of all lets say it, it's windy up there, strategic parking facing into the wind is the key here, eliminating any sea sickness from weeble wobble van shaking. You know it gets windy when the car park has it's own weather cock and monitor. Traffic dies down after around 7pm and was quiet until 7.30 am the next morning, with just the sound of the wind and occasional larks singing away, quite therapeutic in all honesty.

In the morning, the visitors center opens at 9am and fresh coffee, full English, ice cream and cake is available. It is a little expensive but you do have some credit to spend. Overall a recommended parking location, just be aware some of the parking is a little off level, so chocks or readjusting position of the van recommended, there are no other facilities here outside of the visitors center. There was some 02 reception but very slow.

THE HIKE

This hike is an easy one of around 4 Miles, it will give you a taster of a pleasant Yorkshire Dales Hike, taking in some woodland, waterfalls, single track, quaint villages, 2 pub stops and 2 hills. It is manageable by most people as the length is not too much.

The Appletreewick, Howgill hike, is suitable for children and dogs, with only 2 fields that sheep when I hiked this trail in March, so please be aware of this. I hate to add this but there are 2 very narrow stone gates to get through, if you are a larger persuasion you might have to climb over a wall or find an alternative way around.

With 2 pubs to choose from, both with beautiful daffodil lined grass banks either will be a great reprieve from the clean Yorkshire air filling your lungs. The two grass hills are near the back end of the hike, take your time there is no rush and enjoy the views of the sheep grazing away.

Let me know if you enjoy this small but enjoyable hike.
