Gunnerside Hiking

As many of you know I am a red blooded Yorkshireman it's where I was born, where I belong and where my heart lays. I have hiked and visited some beautiful locations in the Peak District, Lake District and parts of Wales, but Yorkshire is like a magnet pulling back home to share it's beautiful vistas and hidden treasures.

In this easy 6 Mile hike we get to visit some of the valleys past lead mining structures, the glimps into the alums of history and let our minds drift aloft the sweet mellow smells of the river and fresh meadow flowers.

Setting Off from Gunnerside

Gunnerside, with its picturesque stone cottages and serene atmosphere, is an inviting beginning to any hike. As I set off from the village, the gentle murmur of the river accompanied me, promising a day filled with the soothing sounds of nature. The initial stretch of the trail winds through flower-filled meadows, a delightful burst of color and fragrance.

A Walk Through History: Bunton Crushing Mill and Blakethwaite Smelt Mill

Bunton Crushing Mill

A couple of miles into the hike, I reached the ruins of the Bunton Crushing Mill. Once a hub of activity during the lead mining boom in the 18th and 19th centuries, the mill now stands as a silent testament to the area's industrious past. It's fascinating to imagine the clatter and clang that would have filled the air as workers processed the lead ore here.

Blakethwaite Smelt Mill

Further along the trail, nestled in the rugged landscape, lie the remnants of Blakethwaite Smelt Mill. This mill was part of a larger network of lead mining operations that dotted the Yorkshire Dales. Walking among the ruins, one can't help but marvel at the ingenuity and hard work of the people who built and operated these mills. The stone structures, though weathered by time, still convey a sense of the robust industry that once thrived here.

Climbing the Hillside

Leaving the ruins behind, the trail began to ascend the hillside. The climb, though challenging, rewarded me with ever-expanding views of the dales below. The landscape transformed with every step, revealing the true grandeur of the Yorkshire Dales. As I reached the peak, the panorama was nothing short of breathtaking—a sea of rolling hills stretching as far as the eye could see.

A Note on the Midgies

As I took in the stunning vistas from the hilltop, I couldn't help but notice the persistent presence of midgies. These tiny biting insects seemed particularly fond of me, leaving my arms speckled with itchy bites. Next time, I'll be sure to pack some insect repellent to keep these pesky critters at bay.

Returning to Gunnerside

The final leg of the hike took me along the tops, following a gentle descent back to Gunnerside. The path led through more meadows, now bathed in the soft glow of the late afternoon sun. The village came into view, a comforting sight after a day of exploration.

My six-mile hike from Gunnerside was a journey through both time and nature. The combination of historical sites and stunning landscapes made for an unforgettable experience. Despite the unwelcome attention from the midgies, the hike was a delightful escape into the heart of the Yorkshire Dales. If you're planning a visit, don't forget your insect repellent, and prepare to be enchanted by this beautiful and historically rich trail.
